Preston and I braved the icky, rainy weather today to head to Dallas for a helmet recheck appointment. He showed more good growth, another 2mm in two weeks. The therapist told me today that she felt there was about 6 more weeks of foam left in the helmet ( when the foam is gone, the helmet cannot be used any longer). This means his total time in this helmet will be about 13 weeks. We really expected longer; we were told longer. As far as asymmetries go, Preston started in the moderate range, and she thinks by the completion of this helmet he will be in the low moderate range, which will put him right on the border of ' to treat or not to treat'. Also, further placing him on the border, will be his age in 6 weeks. He will be about 11 months. In the helmet world, this age garners the title of ' older baby'. 'Older babies' ' heads don't change and reshape as quickly as younger babies, which keeps them in the helmet longer. So, basically, in 6 or so weeks, she was giving me a heads up ( no pun intended) that his head will still not be in the mild range (which is when they believe treatment is no longer necessary) and he will be approaching a slow growth age group. So Kevin and I will have to decide if we want to shell out $2800 for a second band to see if we can get his head to a more symmetrical place. We shall see. I am not shooting for perfection, but I do want to see his ears sitting at the mid line of his head and his flat spot to fill in to where at least it's not super noticeable. But, either way, it seems like time had flown by and the helmet has not been too bad at all. Other than it smelling like dirty feet all the time! :) Ohhh and other than than all the stares and questions we get about it from strangers.
